The emergence of social media in the past decade has led to conflicting viewpoints on whether it is advancing society through increased connectedness or if it is a distraction that is causing a regression of society s collective intelligence. This extended essay uses James Surowieki s book, The Wisdom of Crowds Theory , which outlines the requirements needed in order to successfully achieve a wise crowd, to investigate how social media operates within the outlined criteria.
