This essay explores the extent to which lipstick's inclusion and utilization in Surrealist art and photography during the ten year period 1935-1945 contributed to its iconic status today as a commonplace object. The essay also analyses two historical events that took place during this period; World War Two and the arrival of colour photography, and the effect that both of these events had on the sales and popularity of lipstick.
