This thesis examines empathic projection, embodiment and aesthetics in contemporary art. By analysing the work of artists such as Rebecca Horn and Aliza Shvarts and engaging in my own studio practice I will examine how art can express disease, illness and trauma by not only giving matter form but also through aesthetic experience and empathic responses. I will turn to philosophical and psychological theory as a critical methodology to argue that any work of art which truly aims at implanting a message to the viewer and the pre-requiste of the succes of the said work of art must first attempt to answer the question of empathy.
