Summary, etc. This dissertation examines two terms : absorption and theatricality as discussed in two literary works by Michael Fried. These are not clearly defined by Fried. We are led to believe that they are opposites, however, it is almost impossible to engage with absorption without considering its theatrical elements. I am claiming that these terms are not opposites but complimentary, inter-related and in ways under-defined, to a point that is impossible to assume or present a completely 'absorptive' image. While examining Fried's categories through the work of contemporary artists such as Borremans and Wall the term theatricality which is being used under this system of viewing dynamics can be found to exist within multiple contexts, and has been argued to be too vague in Fried's forced dichotomy.
