The purpose of this extended essay is to assess the feasibility of an open source design strategy within the fashion industry. It is a critical assessment of the contemporary fashion system that relies heavily on out sourcing mass production to low-cost economies and over-consumption. The essay will investigate the political and revolutionary aspects of Open Source Design as a democratic, sustainable and transparent alternative to the environmental and human casualty caused by the current practices of the fashion industry. It further aims to discover the feasibility of an OSD strategy for an emerging fashion designer. Examining open source design philosophy in regards to the fashion industry will help to establish a potential counter-narrative to the current processes of mass production and over-consumption. The essays aims to give a better unerstading of open source design practice and its potential to elevate designers into activists to ignite change. [Abstract] |
