A young mute woman (Holly Hunter) travels with her young daughter (Anna Paquin) from Scotland to New Zealand in the 1800s for an arranged marriage to a wealthy landowner (Sam Neill). The relationship sours when her new husband trades her beloved piano with their neighbor (Harvey Keitel), and a clandestine arrangement is made to win it back. Only one of the men realizes that her affections can only be won through her beloved piano.
