The aim of this essay was to investigate the use of tattoo as a specific cultural visual language and its uses in contemporary art. I have researched the history of tattoos, the spiritual, the pain and emotional aspect of obtaining them. I have discussed that tattoos and scarification have become a medium for performing artists.
