Contemporary western culture is chiefly played out using the entertainment factors of imagery, literature and performance ad the fastest easiest way for an individual to access this culture is through television (Kanter 2012). Television can be understood to be a modern day form of storytelling, holding a mirror up to society and saying "this is your culture". However, through the filters of historical context, political and social values and censorship, the reflection of some, usually those marginalised by society becomes distorted. This essay aims to discuss this with reference to a relevant case study selected for reasons of personal interest as well as being closely related to my studio practice which also deals with the role of the homosexual male in western culture.
