The objective of this thesis is to situate American filmmaker Maya Deren s 1943 experimental film Meshes of the Afternoon at an intersection of psychoanalysis, Surrealism and what American film historian Thomas Shatz has termed poetic psychodrama , through a consideration of Deren s filmic space and the role of film in the 1940 s post-war America.
