This project is an examination of the history of the aesthetic of deconstruction and decay in fashion since the 1990s and its ongoing relevance in contemporary design. A study is conducted of Maison Martin Margiela s earlier work as a leading advocate of deconstructionism in contrast to contemporary collections from Hussein Chalayan, Faustine Steinmetz and Kanye West. While principles and values of these designers may vary, their general aesthetic remains the same. With the unfinished, disintegrated look trending and upclying is on the rise; what is the attraction of this aesthetic and why it has become more socially acceptable and desirable to wear such look that is used and unfinished in a luxurious form is explored.
