This paper is an investigation of Judith Butlers theory that gender is not something you are born with but is instead culturally constructed (Butler, 1990).To support Butler s theory a small scale replication of American sociologist Erving Goffman s study from his book Gender Advertisements(1979) was conducted. This paper analyses Dior advertisements published in British Vogue in particular. This was in order to determine how gender representation has changed over time and to investigate whether or not Goffman s concepts are still relevant. [Abstract]
