This essay contextualizes the complex and intriguing paintings of Belgian artist Michael Borremans in relation to the underlying existentialist concepts which inspired the dramatists of the Theatre of the Absurd. A number of comparisons are drawn bwetwwn these ideas and selected works from the artists oeuvre to establish a philosophical and ideological link between the Theatre of the Absurd and the Borremansian universe.
