The film covers the life of the 18th century Armenian poet Arutiun Sayadin (Sofiko Chiaureli), also known as Sayat Nova. He began as a carpet weaver's apprentice, then became a court minstrel and finally an archbishop. The film's director Paradjanov was imprisoned in 1974 and on his release in 1977 a copy of this film was smuggled into the West. The Soviet authorities eventually agreed to it being shown 6 years later ER -
