From this perspective Caden Cotard, who appears as multiple characters in the film, can be viewed as a metaphor for the process of 'individuation' described by Jung. The film, which is Kaufman's directorial debut, can be understood both as a work of self-exploration or a synechdoche for Kaufman himself, as well as an attempt to enable the viewer to connect with the idea that 'everyone is everyone', which relates to Jung's theory of the collected unconscious.
