This thesis explores the German Expressionist movement and how its legacy continues to influence filmakers of the twenty first century. With focus on Tim Burton as an example of a twenty first century filmmaker, this thesis compares two of his films Vincent and Edward Scissorhands, against the German Expressionist film, The Cabinet of Dr. Calligari. This study looks at the origins of German Expressionism as a movement and the innovative techniques that came from it. It goes on to examine the similarities between the aesthetic, design, and ethos of the films The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920), Vincent (1982) and Edward Scissorhands (1990) to show it is possible to trace where German Expressionism and an influence on Tim Burtons Film.[Abstract].
