The objective of this paper is to examine how Gerhard Richter in executing the cycle October 18 1977 achieved his own stated objective, to "change human beings through painting". It will evaluate Richter's appropriation of the visual images in the 'factual' photographs of terrorists and his representation of them as a reflection on humanity.
