New York rock group Battles is renowned for music which combines looping rhythms of guitars, and electronica and for the band's visceral energy and interplay. The band also receives acclaim for its evocative album artwork, designed by band member Dave Konopka. His training in design and musicianship puts him in a unique position where he experiences the creative process not just for music composition but for music graphics as well. This paper will examine Konopha's design process of the album artwork for Battles discography, in particular their studio albums Mirrored, Gloss Drop and La Di Da Di. His deep involvement in the process gives rise to look to the origins and development of auteur theory and the writings of Ellen Lupton, particularly her idea of Designer as Producer. The application of these reveal how and why Konopka is not only an auteur but also satisfies Lupton's criteria since he brings the skills of many (both photographers and his bandmates) in a work where ownership is shared.[Abstract].
