The objective of this paper is to examine the complexities arising from the interactions between photography, memory and nostalgia. Taking as its starting point the research in neuroscience into the physicality of memory images, this essay considers the writings of theorists Ariella Azoulay, Brian Massumi and Eric Shouse, applying them to the work of two artists, Uta Barth and Christian Boltanski, as well as my own studio practise.

Thesis submitted for B.A. Hons in Fine Art (Painting) 2015.
