There has been a general evolution as to the importance and meaning of place in society; from the earliest philosphers, through to the scientific era where the immensities of space and the true complexity of our inner states of mind challenged our perception of place, to more recent times where place has been intimately linked with the concept of identity. This essay explores the contemporary significance of place to the individual and considers how the theme of place has been employed by certain artists.
