The following text investigates the role of the new digital embodiment of the self-portrait, otherwise known as the selfie, in society. I decipher its structure and origins and discuss its potential as an art object, while also considering how this means of self-depiction has become colonised by consumer capitalism. The text investigate these matters in order to reveal whether the selfie can be considered a true means of autonomous self-expression and self-portraiture.
Thesis submitted for B.A. Hons in Fine Art (Painting) 2015.
